Today we’re filming at your favorite walking, hiking, or biking trail. Pick one with a unique feature or view.

This place looks great!

Now, put on your mic, connect it to your phone, and open the Edits app.

Stand next to the trail so it’s behind you.

Make sure you’re in the middle of the screen, like this.

Take a breath, smile, look at the camera and say:

“Hey [city name]!

Did you know we have a [adjective] trail right in our backyard?

Today I’m at [trail name]. Let’s explore!”

Next we’ll film your b-roll. These visuals will be the meat of your video.

First, film the whole trail.

Slowly pan your camera from right to left for 8 seconds

For example:

Next, let’s show what the trail is made of (dirt, pavement, etc)

Film the trail surface for 8 seconds.

For example:

Next, show how people use the trail.

Film people walking, biking, and/or running for 8 seconds (0r prop your phone up and film yourself).

For example:

Finally, we have the best thing about the trail. This could be a great view or some unique feature.

Film the coolest thing about the trail for 8 seconds OR two 5-second clips.

Time for your ending!

You’ll speak to the camera again, so make sure you have a nice backdrop behind you.

Smile and look at the camera.

Say:

“My name’s [name] and I keep up on all things [city], so you don’t have to.”

Now, head back to your car for a quiet place to record.

You’ll create a voiceover for each b-roll video you just filmed.

Keep wearing your mic for the best audio.

For the video showing the whole trail, answer:

What’s the trail called and where is it located (or where can someone access it)?

For example: “Rainbow trail is located in the Fullersburg Forest Preserve!”

Now, for your trail surface video, answer:

How long is the trail and what’s the terrain like (paved, dirt, woodchips, etc.)?

For example: “It’s over 7 miles long and it’s mostly gravel with a few paved spots.”

For your trail users video, answer:

Who is the trail best for (walkers, runners, bikers)?

For example: “So it’s great for walkers and runners, and people even use it for biking, too!”

Last, for your special feature video, answer:

What unique views or features will people discover along the way?

For example: “Since this is in a forest preserve, there’s actually a cute little nature center, so you can stop in, go to the bathroom, and even grab a snack!”

Now, edit your video.

Cut out pauses, match your voice with your video, and add captions.
